Developmental Snapshot: Perspectives on Teen Priorities

A good looking bird, Hanalei Bay, Kaua'i
I heard about the imaginative dreams of two dear family members yesterday.

My father, not the topic of this entry, dreamt that Einstein was putting his (Albert's) genius at his (my father's) disposal to help him find a misplaced rental car in a quantic parking lot of sorts.

My 13 year old teen son, the topic of this entry (with his explicit and amused consent if I don't use his name), dreamt he had become blind.

The latter dream sounded ominous, symbolic etc...

So, we're in the car, driving back from grocery shopping and I am empathetically listening, asking what he (my teen) thought when he became blind in the dream. He responds that his first thought was that he needed to get glasses. Notwithstanding that glasses may not help blindness, I comment that his first thought was eminently practical, i.e., figuring out something to do. He corrects me quickly: "no, no, my first thought was that I needed to find glasses so.... that I could, you know, make sure that I looked very very cool".

After taking in this age appropriate priority in the face of a life changing, even if just oniric, event, I comment that the dream identifies him immediately as a young teenager.

He laughs, good natured, somehow able to multi-task the being a teenager with lopsided priorities and the being very entertained at what he cares about passionately at this stage in his life.

I don't think I was quite that wise at his age.

Till Later,

Anne
