Galette des Rois Craving: Wish Me Luck!

A coronated Dr. Metheny, Washington DC, January 2013
Are you a first generation immigrant too?

If yes, you know that home-sickness (very specific "mal du pays" in French, "Heimweh" in German, and less specific "nostalgia"or "morriƱa" in Spanish) can strike at the seemingly most incongruous times.

Take me for example today. I am working away at my desk and seemingly on a roll with task accomplishment. Suddenly, as if finally taking stock of a nagging sound that started like a subtle purr but has built to a deafening roar, I realize that I have a pregnancy level craving for galette des rois (link to the best explanation I could find online for anglophilic readers.)

Maybe it's not really that incongruous. I could have seen this coming: a-It's January; b-After years of abstinence, I had a piece of galette last January when Drs. Metheny and Harvey and I were in Washington DC to advocate for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and ate one night at a French restaurant...bien sur; c-my birthday is coming up and my subconscious might be preoccupied with cakes....

It is exactly for this type of situations that the internet revolution comes through brilliantly: about two minutes later, I have located a St. Louis bakery which makes the object I want.

I don't know that it is good yet but the bakery gets credit for trying. I will report back on Saturday.

Just in case, am also ordering a back up one online from NYC...

Till Later,

Anne

PS: The Pint Size Bakery IS stupendous!
