Developmental Snapshot: Kids Love Routines

Fall Weekend Routine
I remember learning, before having children, that kids love routine.

My youngest son creates his own routines. For instance, he calls me every day after school, at about exactly the same time, while I am still at work. I might be seeing patients in clinic or in a meeting: he calls me. If I don't answer, he calls me again, until we talk even very briefly.

One time, I was at a meeting in Hawaii, so with the time difference, he called me mid-morning in the middle of a scientific session:
"Mom, I'm hungry...Can I have a banana?"

Sometimes the call makes the rest of my afternoon, like this one a few weeks ago: "Mom, I've decided I'm going to be Tom Sawyer for Halloween!"

Yesterday's call was all about routine:
"Mom...we had a substitute teacher today..."
"Did you like that?"
"No, I don't like substitutes. They don't teach things correctly."

To all our friends, routine or non-routine lovers out there, a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Till Later,

Anne
